This unit standard teaches learners to recognise and effectively use textual conventions and features specific to business texts and the process to follow in writing texts and reports required in business. It is intended to promote clear, unambiguous communication in plain language and to improve the quality of written reports and other texts that are specific to a business environment, require a particular format and may include specified legislated requirements.

Entry Requirements: 

There is open access to this unit standard but entering learners must be competent in Communication at level 3.


Two days

Who should attend?: 

This course is intended for anyone who needs to draft and produce written texts and reports required in business, and their uses and application in the workplace.

What’s in it for the learner?: 

Learners will be able to:
- use textual features and conventions specific to texts
- identify the intended audience for the communication
- identifythe purpose of a text
- select the appropriate text type, format and layout for the purpose
- organise and structure a technical text appropriately
- use appropriate grammar conventions
- draft and edit a technical text
- recognise errors and check for accuracy
- present the same information in different ways
- use plain language in business.


Formal assessment is conducted. Diagnostic and formative assessments take place during and after learning and can be used in the summative assessment, which is via a portfolio of evidence four weeks after completion of the training.


Once a learner has been declared competent, his/her results are forwarded to the relevant SETA for endorsement. A nationally recognised certificate will be issued.

On completion of the workshop: 

Learners will be able to:
- Use textual features and conventions specific to business texts for effective writing
- Identify and collect information needed to write a text specific to a particular function
- Compose a text using plain language for a specific function
- Organise and structure a text appropriately for a business function
- Present a written text for a particular function in a business environment
