Merchandise

The course is based on the new SAQA-registered unit standard, NQF Level 2; 10 Credits
- Mark merchandise and maintain displays

This program will help you to develop the knowledge and skills required to arrange and present merchandise in the store. In completing this unit standard, you will also learn about setting up and maintaining displays, as well as labeling or pricing of stock.

Entry Requirements: 

This qualification is aimed at individuals entering the sector for the first time, informal / business owners as well as individuals working in entry level occupations in the sector.

Four days

What’s in it for the learner?: 

In just three days you'll learn how to:

  • Approach a customer
  • Design a display for one fixture/shelving unit in the store.
  • Organise the position of the fixture, the stock required and the placement of the merchandise to meet the
    principles of effective merchandising.
  • Design, prepare and place tickets for the fixture.
  • Select one item from the unit for a window or free standing display.
  • Design the display by considering use of props, lighting and style of display.
  • Erect the display.
  • Prepare, place and arrange tickets and labels.
  • Describe how the fixture reflects the principles of merchandising
  • Explain the principles of effective window or free standing displays and how this is applied
  • Explain the relevant policies and procedures, e.g., OH&S, protecting merchandise
Workshop Methodology: 

Interactive workshop to familiarise learners with concepts, processes and issues.
For final certification the learner will need to demonstrate his/her ability to display sales goods and information to attract customers.

Assessments: 

Will be conducted during the workshop by means of observation.
On completion of the workshop the learner will have to submit a portfolio of evidence for assessment.

On completion of the workshop: 
  • Display merchandise given a display instruction.
  • Mark merchandise with labels, tickets and signage.
  • Maintain displays and layouts.
  • Maintain safety and housekeeping whilst marking and displaying merchandise.
  • Prevent shrinkage and losses whilst marking and displaying merchandise
  • Maintain stock in the stockroom in order to enhance efficiency of the supply chain.
