About Company
Botswana Open University (BOU) is a public institution dedicated to providing accessible and flexible education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) methodologies. Established in 1998 as the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL), it was transformed into a university to meet the growing demand for tertiary-level ODL programs in the country.
Mission and Mandate
BOU’s core mission is to make education accessible to all Batswana, particularly out-of-school youth and adults, by offering flexible learning environments that allow individuals to study relevant courses at their convenience.
Campuses and Learning Centers
Headquartered in Gaborone, BOU operates five regional campuses located in Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye, Maun, and Kang. These campuses serve as administrative support centers and provide learner support through strategically located learning centers across the country.

E-Learning Initiatives
BOU is pioneering e-learning for open schooling by developing extensive e-learning resources on the Moodle Learning Management System. These resources are accessible to both BOU students and conventional schools across Botswana, supporting Junior and Senior Secondary students. The university has also introduced vocational subjects like Hospitality and Tourism to align education with market needs.
Leadership
Professor Sheila Tlou serves as the Chancellor of BOU, appointed by the President of Botswana from May 2021 to April 2026. She is a prominent figure in global health and education.
