Rainbow Schools

Overview

Rainbow Schools is a private, co-educational, English-medium institution located in Gaborone, Botswana. It offers a full academic journey from pre-school through primary and secondary (high school and A-Level) levels. The school is known for embracing diversity and providing a multicultural learning environment that emphasizes academic excellence, creativity, and personal development.

Curriculum and Academics
Primary Level

At the primary level (Standards 1–7), Rainbow Schools blends the Cambridge curriculum with the national Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE). Students are introduced to a variety of subjects, including core academics, arts, music, sports, and computing. Modern subjects like robotics are also part of the curriculum. A dedicated Learning Support Department assists learners who need additional academic help.

Secondary and High School

The secondary section follows the Cambridge International curriculum, offering IGCSE at the “O” level and AS/A-Level programs at the “A” level. In junior secondary years, students study a broad range of subjects across sciences, humanities, and arts before selecting five elective subjects for their IGCSE track.

Students achieving strong academic results—typically an average of 80% or higher—can fast-track their IGCSE program. Entry into A-Level programs requires strong grades in the relevant subjects. A-Level students also participate in a compulsory community service component designed to develop social awareness and leadership.

Ownership and Developments

Rainbow Schools serves around 1,200 students, making it one of the larger private institutions in Botswana. It was acquired by Aleyo Capital through its education investment platform, marking a transition from its original private ownership. The school has since been undergoing infrastructure upgrades, including enhanced IT systems, expanded robotics and coding programs, and the construction of a new A-Level center.

Strengths and Achievements

Rainbow Schools is recognized for its balance between academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. It has produced nationally competitive athletes and high-achieving Cambridge students. Several learners have earned distinctions in Cambridge International examinations, including national top awards.

The school emphasizes holistic education, encouraging participation in clubs, performing arts, and social service initiatives alongside academics.

Challenges and Considerations

As with many private institutions, tuition fees at Rainbow Schools are relatively high, and families should account for additional costs such as examination fees, uniforms, and extracurricular activities. Governance and management structures may evolve due to ongoing ownership and merger arrangements.

In previous years, the school has also faced scrutiny over policy decisions but has since demonstrated responsiveness to public feedback.
