Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) is a significant coal mining operation located near Palapye in Botswana's Central District. Established in 1973, MCM has evolved into a key player in Botswana's energy sector.
Originally a subsidiary of Anglo American Corporation, MCM became wholly owned by the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB) in 2016. The mine is situated approximately 14 kilometers northwest of Palapye, along the Serowe-Palapye road .
MCM operates both underground and surface mining methods, producing around 2.8 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal annually . The coal primarily supplies the adjacent Morupule A and B power stations, which together generate a substantial portion of Botswana's electricity .
To meet increasing energy demands, MCM has undertaken expansion projects, including the Motheo Opencast Project initiated in 2021. This project aims to enhance coal production capacity and support Botswana's goal of energy self-sufficiency .
MCM is committed to sustainable mining practices. The mine has implemented measures to minimize environmental impact, such as dry screening processes to reduce water usage and maintaining a formal Environmental Management System . Additionally, MCM engages in community development programs, including health and wellness campaigns and educational support initiatives .
