About Us: Solid Reinsurance operations in Botswana, our vision is to become a trusted and innovative reinsurer, providing reliable and efficient solutions. Our primary focus will be on Africa. In the insurance industry, we are looking for an experienced and dynamic Managing Director to provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the company, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements as we establish operations.

Role Overview: The Managing Director will be the chief executive responsible for leading Solid Reinsurance’s strategy, governance, and operations. This role will be particularly responsible for ensuring we achieve the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) fit and proper requirements and guiding the company through its start-up phase into full operations.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Developing a Business Strategy: Formulating a clear and comprehensive strategy for the company’s growth and positioning within the reinsurance market.
Market Analysis: Identifying key opportunities and threats in the reinsurance market, particularly in the context of the company’s target regions.
Setting Objectives: Defining short and long-term goals to ensure the company’s growth, profitability, and sustainability.
Market Expansion: Assessing new markets and potential partnerships, enhancing geographic expansion, new products, or market segments.
Financial Oversight: Ensuring the efficient functioning of all departments, including underwriting, claims management, finance, and marketing.
Risk Management: Developing and maintaining robust risk management frameworks to evaluate, price, and mitigate risks in the reinsurance portfolio.
Operational Excellence: Streamlining operations and implementing best practices to enhance productivity, cost-effectiveness, and profitability.
Technology Implementation: Driving the adoption of new technologies to improve operational processes, including automation, data analytics, and claims management systems.
Financial Reporting: Overseeing the preparation of financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to stakeholders.
Capital Raising: Identifying funding needs and working to raise capital from investors and other reinsurance partners to ensure the company has sufficient liquidity.
Profitability and Cost Control: Ensuring the company operates profitably, manages claims costs, and maintains underwriting integrity.
Solvency and Compliance: Ensuring compliance with Botswana’s industry regulations and maintaining solvency to meet capital adequacy requirements.
Building and Retaining Talent: Attracting, retaining, and retaining top talent in all key areas of the company, including underwriting, actuarial, claims, and finance.
Culture and Values: Shaping the company culture, aligning team values with the mission, and fostering and fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
Training and Development: Providing ongoing professional development and training opportunities to build expertise within the company.
Delegation: Ensuring that appropriate leadership and management structures are in place, empowering teams to execute their responsibilities effectively.
Client and Broker Relations: Building strong relationships with key clients, brokers, and partners in the reinsurance industry.
Investor Relations: Communicating with investors and shareholders, ensuring they are kept up to date on the company’s progress, challenges, and financial performance.
Reinsurance Relationship: Establishing and maintaining relationships with primary insurers, retrocessionaires, and other reinsurance companies to negotiate favourable terms and ensure a robust reinsurance program.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring the company adheres to local and international regulatory requirements specific to the reinsurance industry.
Legal Framework: Overseeing legal matters related to underwriting contracts, claims settlements, and reinsurance agreements.
Licensing and Approvals: Ensuring the company meets all necessary licensing requirements for operating in different markets and managing.
Brand Building: Establishing and promoting the company’s brand in the reinsurance market, highlighting its unique value propositions.
New Business Development: Developing business development strategies to drive sales and acquiring new clients, brokers, and partnerships.
Public Relations: Representing the company at industry events, media engagements, and public forums to enhance visibility and credibility.
Crisis Response: Handling operational or financial crises (e.g., significant claims or market downturns) by developing appropriate responses to protect the company’s interests.
Adaptation to Market Shifts: Quickly adjusting strategies in response to industry shifts, such as changes in regulation, risk exposure, or technological advancements.
KPIs and Metrics: Establishing and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure company progress, profitability, and operational efficiency.
Reporting: Preparing regular reports for stakeholders, investors, and the board of directors to track the company’s performance against its objectives.
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline (Master’s degree is an added advantage).
Professional qualification such as ACII, AIISA, ARe, or equivalent is required.
Minimum of 12-15 years’ experience in insurance/ reinsurance, with at least 5 years at executive or senior management level.
In-depth knowledge of the Botswana regulatory environment, particularly NBFIRA requirements.
Proven track record in strategic leadership, business growth, and operational excellence.
Strong financial management, governance, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal abilities.
