Position Title: Accountant
Reports To: Finance Manager / Chief Financial Officer
Location: [Botswana]
Industry: Microfinance / Financial Services

 

 

Role Purpose

 

The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the financial operations of the microfinance institution. The role requires strong knowledge of Botswana’s financial regulations, tax requirements, and microfinance industry practices.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

 

Financial Accounting & Reporting

 

• Prepare and maintain accurate books of accounts in compliance with IFRS and Botswana accounting standards.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Maintain general ledger reconciliations and ensure all transactions are properly captured.
• Assist in preparation of management accounts for decision-making.

 

 

Regulatory & Compliance

 

• Ensure compliance with Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) requirements, including VAT, PAYE, and Corporate Tax.
• Prepare and submit statutory returns on time.
• Support compliance with the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) guidelines and reporting requirements.
• Assist in the preparation for external and internal audits.

 

 

Treasury & Cash Flow Management

 

• Monitor daily cash flows and bank reconciliations.
• Ensure loan disbursements and repayments are accurately recorded.
• Assist in managing relationships with banks and other financial institutions.

 

 

Loan Portfolio Support

 

• Reconcile loan management system records with the general ledger.
• Monitor loan portfolio performance and flag variances or anomalies.
• Provide financial insights on portfolio quality, delinquency rates, and provisioning for bad debts.

 

 

Internal Controls & Risk Management

 

• Implement and monitor internal control systems to safeguard assets.
• Ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures.
• Support fraud prevention and detection efforts.

 

 

Other Duties

 

• Support budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Provide financial data and analysis to management for decision-making.
• Participate in staff training on financial procedures where necessary.

 

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Professional certification (ACCA, CIMA, BICA) preferred or in progress.
• Minimum 3–5 years accounting experience, preferably in financial services or microfinance.
• Strong knowledge of Botswana tax laws, BURS requirements, and NBFIRA regulations.
• Experience with loan management systems and accounting software (SAGE).
